SUMMARY:Introduction to the Pine Hawk Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Acton’s most significant archaeological discovery\, the Pine Hawk site in South Acton. The site was inhabited by Native Americans for over several thousand years and yielded a treasure trove of artifacts. Doug Halley was the Acton official most involved as the discovery of this site unfolded over 20 years ago. He will describe that process of discovery\, its significance\, and how the project activated an increased interest in historical preservation\, such as the Trail Through Time in North Acton. Doug also created an award-winning exhibit about Pine Hawk\, which can be seen today on the ground floor of the Acton Memorial Library. This program is presented with support from Acton Memorial Library and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. \nThis event is free and does not require registration. It will be recorded for future viewing at https://www.pinehawk.org/videos/. Questions? Email friends.of.pinehawk@gmail.com

SUMMARY:West Acton Historic Homes Tour
DESCRIPTION:Step inside historic homes and see and learn about many more as we tour West Acton! Once known simply as the “west part of town\,” in 1845 the railroad arrived in this section of Acton\, transforming the sleepy hamlet into a vibrant village of new commerce and homes. Today\, it retains much of its 19th-century charm\, including charming storefronts\, workers’ cottages\, and storybook Victorians. \nJoin us for this unique experience to see historic homes\, inside and out\, and immerse yourself in culture and history. Offered one time only! Space is limited. \nThis is a guided walking “happy hour” tour\, no libations but a lot of fun packed into an hour! (Please note\, this is an approximate time\, the tour may be slightly longer\, but Happy Hour and 15 Minutes doesn’t have the same ring…)

SUMMARY:Library: West Acton Citizens' Library Book Disscussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Location: West Acton Citizens’ Library | 21 Windsor Avenue\, Acton MA 01720 \nThe Personal Librarian By: Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray \nIn her twenties\, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts\, books\, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world\, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection. \nBut Belle has a secret\, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener\, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white—her complexion is dark because she is African American. \nThe Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman\, famous for her intellect\, style\, and wit\, and shares the lengths to which she must go—for the protection of her family and her legacy—to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. \nCopies of the book will be available at the West Acton Citizens’ Library. \nReasonable accommodations for people with disabilities are available upon request. Please email actadultservices@minlib.net with a description of the accommodation you will need and include a way we can contact you if we need more information.

SUMMARY:COA presents: CarFit Event-April 28\, 9:30-11:30 AM
DESCRIPTION:Open to out-of-town seniors beginning April 8th  \nThe Acton Council on Aging (COA) is offering a free community CarFit event in the Senior Center parking lot. CarFit is designed to give a quick but comprehensive check on how well an older driver and their vehicle work together with a focus on comfort\, safety\, and mobility. Sometimes simple adjustments to mirrors\, seat\, steering wheel\, or head restraint can make a big difference! It is not a driver test. CarFit is a national program developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Each appointment takes less than 30 minutes for a technician to complete a 12-point checklist with each driver. \nAn occupational therapist will also meet with each driver and\, if applicable\, will show examples of devices that can improve the driver’s “car fit.” We always receive a good deal of positive feedback after these events—don’t miss out! \nAdvance registration is required (call 978-929-6652)\, as is signing a waiver on the day of the event. \n  \n
